How one-way vision vinyl works…

  • From the outside looking in: The human eye is naturally drawn to the bright, printed white areas of the vinyl, which reflect more light than passes through the perforations. The brain then “fills in the gaps”, making the graphic appear solid and complete, effectively blocking the view into the interior.
  • From the inside looking out: Because the back of the film is black and absorbs light, the eye is instead drawn to the much brighter light passing through the micro-perforations from the outside. The black layer becomes less noticeable, allowing people inside to see through the holes with a clear, lightly tinted view of the exterior.

This effect is highly dependent on lighting conditions and works best during the daytime when the exterior is significantly brighter than the interior. At night, if internal lights are on and it is dark outside, the effect is reversed, and people may be able to see inside the room, requiring alternative privacy solutions like frosted vinyl, blinds or curtains.

One Way Vision Vinyl

One-way vision vinyl (Contra Vision) works by using a clever optical illusion based on light perception and thousands of tiny, evenly spaced holes across the film.

The film has a white, printable surface on the outside, which reflects exterior light and displays the full-colour graphic to external observers, and a black adhesive backing on the reverse side facing the glass.
